F2.8D Nikkor 80-200 vs Nikkor 80-400 ED F4.5-5.6D ED on a Nikon D80?

sports and want to shoot long shots (could not afford a 70-200 f2.8 right now)

I use a 80-200 AF-D myself. It is a good target. It also works well with a Kenko Pro 1.4x teleconverter for @ 280mm f / 4. The TC maintains Kenko AF and as a measurement – with the corresponding Nikon AF TC you do not get (!) In theory, you could also use a 2x TC but IMO it would take too much of a success in terms of AF speed and image quality. Despite the weight and lack of virtual reality, handheld photography is perfectly feasible provided that this speed shutter. Otherwise the use of permanently attached tripod collar. RRS and Kirk still make custom quick release plates for this purpose with the Ark Swiss-style feet. (A universal lens plate also works, of course.) I tried the 80-400 for about 30 seconds once, but focused slower than molasses my D200. A great lens, but not suitable for sports – Nikon should update this lens with AF-S version.
