What these numbers mean?
I have Nikon Coolpix 8400 and its goal that says Zoom Nikkor 21.6mm 1:2.6-4.9 ED 6.1 24-85mm zoom is 3.5x is a good lens? Is this considered a normal lens or telephoto zoom? thanks
Is a zoom lens that ranges from mild to moderately large telephoto. In the most wide angle (6.1 mm), the largest aperture is f/2.6, which is not so bad. In most zoom (21.6mm), the largest aperture is f/4.9, which is not bad. The 24-85mm expresses "35 mm equivalent" for this purpose, as everyone has a basis of comparison. That is 24 to 85 instead of something like 36 to 130 tells me that the sensor is the smallest one made, so the image quality is probably better than most point and shoot cameras out there. The "ED" tells us that at least one lens element that will be of help to correct distortions of color. All we can say this is not the cheapest piece of plastic Nikon ever made. To my knowledge, the elements of erectile dysfunction are glass.
