50mm lens ..?

Many people talk about how great the Canon 50mm F1.8 lens and how is the business of the century. I want to know what kind of images to use the 50 mm lens and if there is an equivalent of the same for the Nikon D40?

Note that on a D40 you have to use the AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D in manual focus mode, as it is not a lens AF-S/AF-I.
