Focusing on a digital camera?

So my first digital camera just happens to be a professional (a Nikon Coolpix 8800 that my father since was another). I hardly know how to use it, and I only found some things out by experimentation. I've noticed that the shutter speed is very slow in darker rooms (like my room is not dark, but I think there is light there is enough light). That makes it very difficult to take some pictures without it being blurred. How should I take clear, focused on images and light dimmer? (Especially at concerts, but I suppose that's another story) That the problem is, I can not find manual
