Is a af-s nikkor 55mm-200mm 1.4-5.6g a bad lens to start off with?

I just recently got a nikon d40x and i also just got the 55mm-200mm,should i have gotten a different lens to start out with?

It’s (55-200 1:4-5.6) a good lens to start off with especially if you are into portraits. 55mm end will be like a short telephoto but works fine in a lot of situations. What lens you require actually depends on how you shoot. If you get another 18-55mm lens, it’ll be better for general use.
