What lens should I get to go with the two I already have?
I shoot with a nikon d3000 and own an 18-55 kit lens and a nikkor 35mm f1.8 lens which I use for portraits. I want something with a little more range to round out my kit a bit so I have a lens that I can use as an everyday multipurpose lens. I was thinking of getting a sigma 24-70 f2.8 mostly because the lens is really fast. But then I also am considering getting into shooting sports at my school which would lead me to buy the 70-200 f2.8, which is kind of out of my price range. Is there any middle ground, or do you have a better suggestion?
You already have 18-55 mm, so maybe the best lens would be the 70-200 mm to give you that added reach.
Buy the way, who told you that the 35 mm lens was a good portrait lens? A portrait lens is a medium telephoto lens, which the 35 mm is NOT.
For your camera, either a 50 mm 1.4 or 60 mm f/2.8 macro lens are the two choices for shooting portraits.
My guess is you may want to take at least a class or two in photography so you can learn these fine details before you spend any more money.
If you intend on shooting a lot of sports, eventually you will want to own a 24-70 mm f/2.8, 70-200 mm f/2.8 and a 300 mm f/2.8
The 24-70 mm and 70-200 mm are great for shooting basketball.
The 70-200 mm and 300 mm excellent for shooting football (the 200-400 mm zoom maybe)
Here is a sample using the 300 mm lens
