Is this a good setup for portrait photography and extreme sports?

The 50mm f1.8 lens is a pretty well priced and is quite versatile, but you're losing something else. You need at least a focal length of 200 mm to complement this. There are plenty of places that hire lenses so you could buy a body and then try some different holiday lenses until your sure what you need to buy.
