How to give images that “snap”?

Hey, I’ve been taking images lately, and I’ve noticed that my images seem sort of dull. That is flat, or not so crisp. It cant be the lens, because its a vintage Nikkor 50mm 1.8 at around f-5.6.
After looking at my images and comparing them to some others, it looks to be that most of my images are lacking that crispness.
Anyway, I was just wondering, if it is because of lighting, or something else. Any help, thanks.

Assuming that you are in sharp focus without any camera shake, you might try the “unsharp mask” or other sharpening tool in your image processing software.

and read the caption for an explanation.

Be sure to click on (at least) “All sizes” so that you can see the difference in the samples.

Another easy thing you can do is increase the saturation, either overall or for specfic colors. This sample was NOT sharpened, but had increases in red and green saturation: http://www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/448932718/
