I want to get into photography as a hobby but I can’t afford a DSLR?
I have a Nikon Coolpix P1 which I bought 2 or 3 years ago and is relatively decent as far as point and shoot cameras go.
But it’s so limited in its features and I hate that my photos never look as good as they could with a good camera.
I really can’t afford an SLR though, and I’m thinking of saving up, but that will take a year at least. What can I do in the meantime to “educate myself”?
Buy a film slr and learn the basics. I would look for a Pentax K1000, a Nikon FM2 or an Olympus OM-1. All of these are ridiculously cheap, fully manual so you’ll actually learn about how to use aperture, shutter speeds and depth of field, and capable of a quality (if handled skilfully) which will blow away the results from a digital point-and-shoot.
