The Nikon D80 DSLR Camera

The Nikon D80 digital SLR camera is perhaps not exactly what fans were waiting for Nikon. It is the intent to replace the D70, however, is strikingly similar. This brings to mind an interesting question. All companies, electronic or otherwise, are under constant pressure from its shareholders to launch new products. Even to produce the hugely popular "widget" super darn well your shareholders expect the production of "Super Duper widget "in the next fiscal year. In this sense, the Nikon D80 could say that the D70 is a camera that needs some improvements.

The D80 features a new "kit" lens, the 18-135mm f/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX, and a new vertical grip, the MB-D80. The kit lens is, by definition, very low range, made to keep the price affordable camera for the beginner photography. The zoom lens has a shutter speed slower than the speed of the D70 – 1 / 4000 compared to the previous 1 / 8000.

I was happy to discover that there were also some improvements. The D80 viewfinder is bigger and brighter than the D70 and the sensor is about 30% more resolution.

The D80 sensor is a CCD ICX493AQA manufactured by Sony. The sensor is also used in the Sony Alpha 100 and Pentax K10D. 10.2 megapixel images translates into 3872 x 2592 pixels, enough to produce directly from the camera for prints up to 11×16 "without resizing. The base ISO of the CCD is 100, with third-stop increments by up to ISO 1600. You can also boost ISO one more stop, to an effective ISO 3200.

The D80 sensor noise is mainly derived from three design elements: the APS frame size, the smallest overall size of the photosites compared with the 6 MP sensor and the lack of electronics in the NR-sensor. That said, Nikon has integrated a number of things on the D80 to deal with the possibility of increased noise in the consumer cameras above. For example, once again, the data are kept in 12-bit space right up to the final compression to an 8-bit JPEG. Secondly, the scanning engine has an internal noise reduction component in it. However, low quality of light images are easily comparable to the D70. This is perhaps due mainly to most CCD sensor.

The camera body is technically slightly smaller in all dimensions compared to the D70s, but current owners design is very similar. Most of the buttons are the same and in the same places, and there are many dedicated buttons for commonly used functions. For example, a group button next to the shutter that allows you to change the metering mode, exposure compensation, mode, and AF mode. Meanwhile, the buttons on the left the 2.5-inch, 230,000 pixel LCD screen let you change white balance, ISO and image size and quality settings without diving into the menus. About the only specific function without its own control AF area selection, although the camera button can be programmable function programmed to cover that, if desired. The default for this button to display the current ISO setting.

Three areas adorn the body the camera. The mode dial lets you choose between program, aperture or shutter-priority, full manual fully automatic, or any of the six preset modes in the exhibition scene. The other two dials, located on the front and back of the grip, let you change the aperture and shutter speed. Overall, take the picture quick and easy manual, with a menu system that is easy to use.

For the most part, Nikon has negotiated trade quality form adequate to provide a digital SLR camera for under $ 1000. It's still a little more expensive than comparable models from Canon or Petax, but imaging Nikon's reputation can charge a little extra without anyone blinking an eye.
