Good for a superzoom is an excellent target. Could do better with different objectives? Sure. And if you end up buying the 18-200mm, expect some distortion chromatic aberration and vignetting, identity of any target that aims to do everything. It's a compromise most people are happy do for the sake of convenience. The truth is that any lens is a compromise. If you are serious about portrait photography, I'd suggest a quick primer as the 50mm f/1.4D. The 75 mm effective focal length is fine for portraits, and a fast lens can be indispensable to isolate the subject. As a general rule, remember this: cheap / Convenient / good. Choose two.
