Well, nikkor glass is better, but the Sigma lens offering to open in landscape mode while it is just a regular Zoom Nikkor lens. For portraits and landscapes, the 17-70mm is better. Try to see if you can not get the 17-75mm Sigma DC Macro for Nikon F mount (is what I have and the $ 300 is well worth it).
