Nikon D5000-problem with the shutter speed?

I went to my lake last night to take some interesting photos with long exposure or speed shutter mode (s). When I tried to take the picture would not take the picture keeps flashing red in the viewfinder. I also discovered that when I tried to take a picture of my dog really close to take a picture right. It was pitch black in the lake, I do not know if that matters. Any tips or anyone know why it happens this?

That flash red (the small dot in the lower left corner?) Is saying that the camera could not focus. I focus manually, then press and hold the AE-L/AF-L little when you press the shutter button to stop the camera trying to focus himself. If you have a manual focus lens, you can only just focus manually and then take the shot. Try again tonight! :)
