manual focus nikkor lens
Problem with my Nikon D40 standard lens?

Hello!

I have a Nikon D40, had it for about two years now, and the lens I got with it is starting to die on me.

The lens is a 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Lens which came with the camera.

Whenever I try to auto-focus with it, it simply is unable to move. It just makes a very quiet clicking/whirring noise inside the lens.

It’s fine for manual, but I need automatic for quite a few things.

Any ideas??

I can’t afford to replace a £120 lens at the moment!
Thanks Chao! :D

Alas, it only beeps for focus when it’s in auto-focus.

Otherwise I just have to have a keen eye, and that doesn’t always work. What seems in focus may turn out to be terribly out of focus once I get it on the computer. D:

If you bought a 2+ year warranty you might be able to fix it.

I’m sorry if otherwise, which I suspect is, unfortunately, the case.

This is a problem that frequents many of us.

Do you decide to get the same lens? Or buy another, perhaps better lens? A common conflict.

There is unfortunately a bigger problem for you, because you need an AP-S lens. Something compatible, at any rate, with Nikon D40, D40x and D60. Have a look at Tamron; for cheap prices, you’ll get a very good general purpose to up to around even 250mm.

That’s if it’s broken. It’s probably not broken enough for you to replace. Does it still auto-focus? I know that the barrel should extend, retract or twist when you half-depress the shutter release.

If it doesn’t, do take it to your local camera *specialist*, as they can fully examine all its problems and see for themselves. If they do say something is wrong, ask them for a quote. I daresay they might not be able to fix it, but might be able to refer you to a good camera ‘doctor’. However, I do think the price will be more than the lens itself, unfortunately.
