What is the difference between 35 mm and 55 mm?

I am interested in the new-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G AF. What is the difference between 35mm and 55mm. From my understanding, 35mm will give me a broader framework. I have a Nikon D40 and I would shoot more indoors without flash.

The 35mm f/1.8 will an inner lens nice though, because your only going to be using the internal 2/3rds of the image, the so-called crop factor 1.5 comes into play, and NOT get a picture very wide. The 35mm lens now "see" as a 52.5mm lens is not very wide. Your best player in something that is broader still, and Nikon 24mm ~ 12 may be the ticket, or other people around with these numbers. However, none is very fast lens and housing, in low light without flash, the more difficult. I have a 16mm f/2.8 which works out to about 24 mm on my camera, and one of them may be something you may want to think. Nikon also has 18 mm lenses as well. Good luck Bob – Tucson
