nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor lens?

I'm considering the purchase of this objective for my Nikon D40, I consider myself an amateur photographer and I wonder if I would notice a big difference in my photos with this objective in comparison with the kit lens. im not quite sure what you mean the specifications of the lens I want to buy, but far fewer understand the f means its faster and allows more light? my photos have a better depth of field? and information about this objective, or any recommendations for other lenses in the same price range would be greatly appreciated. thanks! I added this link to refer http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-50mm-Nikkor-Digital-Cameras/dp/B00005LEN4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=photo&qid=1264619140&sr=1-1

50 mm is a good low light lens. Remember, though not catch everything. Want a closer shot will be walking to get it – if that's cool and then go for it. Depth of field. That's an issue often brought here. The depth of field is readily available especially with a zoom lens up close. Low light also can get a good depth of field. But in reality light does not really matter because everything is in the distance from you to your topic. Look at this photo, taken with my Rebel XS in the sun brilliant at a distance of inches from my subject on manual focus. All I did was turn the focus ring up and down along my issue to the point in particular came in focus – a depth of field goal. http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimsphotostuff/3427701780/sizes/l/
