I have a Nikon D90. I have a lens AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm 1:4 5-5.6 G. I have never taking classes or anything.?

Just started taking pictures of my son at Jumper Competitions. During the Day the pictures are perfect. But at night, the are awful. I use the camera in Manual. But do not now where to put the F Number or the Aperture Number…It’s complicated for me. I know classes are mandatory, but in the meantime would love to take nice pictures. I do not have a tripod.

The aperture (f/stop number) relates to the amount of light that enters the camera. The lower the f/stop number, the more light that can enter. The problem with your lens is that it is a variable aperture…when it is zoomed out at 70mm the maximum aperture is f/4.5, and when you zoom in it can only open to f/5.6.

With a lot of light that is fine, but with less light you either need:

1) A faster lens (smaller f/stop number) like a f/2.8
2) Increase the cameras ISO (the higher the ISO number, the greater chance of “digital noise”)
3) Use a slower shutter speed (the slower the shutter speed, the more motion blur you get)

Read your manual!!! and practice!!!
