Why not autofocus Nikkor 70-300?

I looked up a Nikkor 70-300mm lens in B & H online shop. It is said that target when connected to a Nikon D40 will not auto focus capabilities. 1. Why is this? 2. Is it a problem? 3. Will it damage my camera body or his own? Thanks! Here is the link # http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/207359-GREY/Nikon_1928_Zoom_Telephoto_AF_Zoom.html comments

It because that version of that goal requires a mechanical connection of focus from the body of the lens that the D40 and D60 do not have. If you use a D40 has to use a lens with the focus motor built into the lens. It's a great thing, more or less, depending on what you are taking photos. Ok so my camera is a Nikon but I I use my 70-300mm lens for sports photography, usually with the focus mode set to continuous, and let me play with the zoom. work the zoom and focus on an object will be slower than working only zoom. Oh, and not damage the lens or the camera!
