Thinking of buying a Nikon D80 DSLR, the lens?
The one I'm looking at says it is a "Nikon D80 DSLR Camera w/18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX Nikkor VR Lens. "Does anyone know if that's a good lens for general photography? Or would be better for specialized things? (Macro, speed, etc)
Yes, it is commonly used photography, wide angle a (very) mild telephoto. Its definitely not the best, but a good value for money. You may want to look at other targets. As for the macro, it has been an increase of 0.31, which is reasonably good for close-ups, but the extension tubes (or similar) would be necessary to approach a true macro lens.
