Travel photography, the lens to buy?
My husband and I are going to Paris and Rome for two weeks at the end of the year. I would buy a new goal before I go, but I have trouble deciding what would be better. Currently I have a Nikon D70 with a Sigma 18-55 and 70-300 Nikkor. I'm not satisfied with the Sigma quality at all. I'm trying to decide between buying the Nikkor 16-85mm f3.5-5.6 VR. It would cover a wide range nice and allows me to change lenses less frequently, I do not know if the max openings are low enough to photograph inside the museums and churches. I have also considered the Nikkor 50mm f/1.4, which would cover large but I have to use my Sigma for wide-angle photographs of buildings and such. The other option I am considering is the Nikkor 50 mm 1.8 and an external flash, as the lens is so cheap. The flash good to have, but not very useful on the trip. Opinions? Suggestions? Things have not considered?
You seam to the eye do it indoors, large areas much for my suggestion is to go low, wide and fast. If you go fast enough you do not need VR. Having to pack only a target on my bike rides I like to think that this is a skill they practiced well, so my choice would be the 50mm 1.4. If you have the money you might want to try for a broader principal, perhaps a 30 mm 1.4. Primes are always going to give you the best picture because there are no moving parts that can be built to near perfection. A zoom lens that can perform very well will cost more than $ 1,000. But just 50mm can be found for under $ 200. The question you have to ask yourself is will be sufficiently broad to 50 mm for the interior of the cathedrals, Will you be shooting small details in a longer lens could be useful, and what is going to be like the lighting?
