Long Exposure Photography: Astrophotgraphy?

I am really interested in getting into Astrophotography. I have a mount but I can not afford to pay $800.00 for a DSLR. I have expensive SLR’s but I need digital. Is it possible for me to use cameras that look like DSLR’s but do not have changeable lenses? An example would be

The Nikon Coolpix 10.1 Megapixel Digital Camera.

Do these types of cameras have long exposures greater than 30 seconds? Is it possible for me to do astrophotography with these types of cameras or must I get a DSLR?

Go to KEH cameras online and look at a Canon Rebel digital DSLRs (the older models work well too so a 6.3 Megapixel sensor is ok). The used price on these is in the $250 to $300 dollar range last time I looked. Then get IRIS image processing software which is freeware at www.astrosurf.com/buil and has tutorials on how to image process DSLR images.Buil’s site reviews also performance of older and newer DSLRs. For example a Rebel XT300 will be less expensive than a point and shoot and it will give you excellent results. If you want to go further after this then you have a good foundation, know how the workflow goes, and can spend more money on better equipment..
