SLR digital camera …. cleaning, how and when?

I'm trying to learn everything I can on my Nikon D80 as well. I just got it a few months ago and knew nothing about photography with a camera. I've been reading and learning. I wonder, when will we recommend cleaning the inside the chamber? Regularly? Once a month? Not unless you see spots in the images? And when cleaning is necessary, how you do, and what used? I have a lens cleaning kit with lens tissue, cleaning agent, and a small brush with an air bubble at the end of a … are those that use clean Inside? I do not think the camera needs cleaning, and I would be very cautious in fact do, but I think this information is really important to know and I do not seem quite to find a book that answers for me.
