Studio lighting options: not professional, for one weekend only ….?

I am not a professional photographer, and normally I have no need studio lighting. I have a pretty decent camera (Nikon D50) and enjoy taking pictures of my children (what mother doesn't?) I will be present in a show in a couple of weeks where we offer photography for use in advertisements and / or invitations. We are not selling your photos as prints, only for use with our work. Last year we bought a bit of continuous illumination, which was supposedly "daylight" bulbs? The pictures were too yellow, or blue as well. Our white background was far from the target. Is there anything I can do with the continuous illumination, or I spent the next week learning on the art of flash photography? This is not an ideal senario for me, as the lighting will probably never use it again, but if I have to do, I will. I have only a few days to make a decision and buy the equipment, so all the help, ideas and opinions greatly appreciated.

I agree with EEdude. You must have adequate lighting needs just set your white balance (WB). This is easily accomplished manually seting the World Bank. For this Study set up your computer and turn your lights on. Take a picture in program mode to get your camera settings. Once you have these settings (ISO, speed shutter and aperture) to reach the mark in M-mode and leave your camera in M mode Now you need to select a World Bank adjustment by pressing and holding the button WB back of the camera and turn the knob back. Look at the LCD screen up and seeing the sun and clouds etc little icon cycle as turning the knob. Cycle until you see PRE. Release button press and hold the WB button until you see flashing PRE top LCD panel. Take a picture of his white backround and the camera should flash GD and the LCD panel that established the WB. If flashing nG need to try again. Once you see GD flash are all set and can take pictures and you should have the appropriate white balance. I also shoot in raw that way can be refined if necessary with Photoshop. Do not forget to go back to your white balance after you have finished clips or pictures to the side will go all funny.
