What (affordable) telephoto lens for motorsport?

For the money, which is a very good lens with Vibration Reduction. You can get pretty close to 200 mm. In a cropped frame sensor, which actually get is 300 mm a 200 mm lens. And so is ideal for what you are trying to do. It is a very good lens, delivering a good quality. A better lens would be the lens 300 mm VR-70, but that is outside of its range, is twice the price of 55-200mm lens. The difference in quality should not be noticeable, however. The differences really be noticed in the build quality of the lens.
