I’m from Toronto, planning to buy a DSLR in New Jersey or New York?
Hi there,
I will be going to NYC next week.. I’m debating whether to buy a Nikon D90 with a kit here in Toronto just buying one while I’m across the border. I’ve come across some worries though..
1. Do I have to pay any applicable taxes when I cross immigration?
2. I’m staying in NYC/NJ for about 9 days, I’ve passed the 7 day mark. If I buy a camera over the allowed $750 dollar limit what will happen?
3. What if I pretend like a bought the camera in Toronto before I went to NY and not declare it when I fly back to Toronto?
4. Because there is no tax in NJ, will that affect me bringing it across the border?
Is there any advice you can give me? Anything I need to know, should know that may help me?
B&H has a good selection and prices on cameras and camera accessories.
If shipped to a non-NY address instead of bought in the store, there is no sales tax.
You can even score free shipping as well.

Pretending you bought the camera in Canada in my humble opinion is fraud.
Also, they may want to see proof that it was as well which you will not have.
