Help with uploading images to the computer of a Nikon Coolpix?

I attached the cable to the USB drive and then to the camera, so I know that is not the problem. But the camera is out of power .. mass should I charge? And this isn't my camera, so I'm afraid I may have broke! Do I have to have a downloaded a program to upload the photos?
