I am looking into getting a nikon d40x, the 10.2 mp.?

I would like to do wedding photography in my area. There are NO other wedding photog. services here so my lack of professional wedding experience will not be a huge turn away. Here, you either take them yourself, or you don’t have them at all. I have a GREAT eye for photography and shot my brother in laws wedding with great results. I just want a starter camera and this one looks good. Anyone have any advice? I have been to picturetown on the NIKON web page. Also , is the 55-200mm zoom a good lens as far as depth and range? Thank you in advance for any answers. I would like comments on this camera only please as it is in my starting budget.

Great advice above… I agree with the idea of getting a D80 instead of the D40X. It is “only” another $200 and the added flexibility is well worth it.

I’d think that the 55-200 is not the best choice for a wedding. While I think Nikon’s 17-55 would be a pretty good choice, it costs more than the camera. I love my 18-200 VR for general shooting, but frankly, I would not recommend it for weddings. It’s a pretty good lens, but you will have to spend some time making corrections in Photoshop on your wide shots.

Consider getting a D80 with the 18-135 lens. Honestly, I don’t think it is the same quality as the 24-85 that fhotoace suggested, but if you are starting out with ONE lens in your kit, I think you need to allow for a tight room or a distant shot and the 18-135 will allow that.

You’re going to need a flash and you should only consider the Nikon SB600 or SB800, with the SB800 offering more lighting solutions that you can learn to use down the road. The SB600 would not be a handicap, though.
