Is the Nikkor 70-300mm good for action shots (sports)?

Hey guys! I wonder if 70-300mm would be a good camera shots action. I have the intention to use it to shoot sports like surfing and snowboarding. Should I try to save some money and get the 55-200mm instead? Hopefully give enough power lens zoom to make me close to the Internet? I have a Nikon D60 with 18-55mm in case you were wondering. Thanks in advance!
