Sony Cybershot T900 image quality?
I am currently using a Nikon Coolpix 4100 camera and was considering to replace it with this sony t900. Does anyone know if the overall picture quality (especially indoors) of the sony would be better than the nikon’s? I understand it’s not really a fair comparison since the sony is a 12mp shooter while the nikon is a 4mp shooter.
But just wanted to know, since I heard sony’s t series had been notorious for poor low light image quality with high noise at high ISOs.
Would appreciate if someone would enlighten me on whether the sony t900 is good enough to replace my old cam. Thanks in advance.
It’s good enough to replace your Nikon. The characteristic noise at higher ISOs has become sort of a Sony trademark, and even appears on their top-of-the-line, $3,000 DSLR, the a900. It’s the cost of applying low gain to their cameras’ base ISOs, which has the effect of actually making Sony’s low ISO images less noisy than competitors’. Some people don’t like it. I reckon you pays your money and takes your choice.
As far as the sensor goes, all things being equal, new sensors are better than old ones, big sensors are better than little ones, and little pixels are better than big ones. Big, new sensors with little pixels are the best of all. The Cybershot has all three.
Probably the most important difference is the addition of image stabilization on the Sony model. If the Nikon had it and the new Sony didn’t, I would say stick with the Nikon, all of the above be damned. Image stabilization is huge.
There are other differences, but nothing you wouldn’t get used to. The Cybershot is newer, thus it has niceties. Niceties! Pictures will transfer to your computer alarmingly fast. The rear LCD is big. It weighs less, it shoots video at 720p, it uses a single lithium-ion instead of clunky AAs, it and looks, let it be said, substantially cooler.
