Digital SLR purchase?
I am looking into getting a digital SLR camera, because I am looking into photography as a career. I am in high school, but I do not mind something that takes awhile to figure out. The price limit would be (roughly) $850 or less. I am mostly into Landscape and sports photography. I am open to any brand, I currently have a nikon coolpix 4600 (point-and-shoot camera).
I have been considering the olympus e-510, but I was wondering if there would be something better for what i’m into. I would really like to customize alot. and like alot of variety. I Wouldn’t mind spending all of my spare time for a matter of days reading a manual.
and finally the question. 
What camera would you recommend?

I am surprised that your photo classes will not be using 35mm SLR’s
