Nikon F4 shutter sticking?
A received from a friend today thinning his collection F4s Nikon camera. He said he had not used more a year, and since it was a freebie, I can not really complain. But here's the problem: After purchasing a roll of film, I has loaded the film and shot away, mostly in full-auto in the bright sun. After taking the film in the processing and back, I realized that film exposure was only about the bottom 1/4th down. Everything above that point it was empty. I removed the lens, and looked in the mirror, and shot me some shots. Indeed, the shutter is opened only a 1/8th of the road. Occasionally, it opens all the way and are open to the mirror, and slowly after about about 1 / 2 of a second. What gives this thing? Is this a major repair or just need some lubricant between two parties? Is it just needs more exercise? Thoughts, guys?
I try to give the exercises a lot more before I sent off for repair. If I understand correctly, shutter replacement typically costs between 150 and 200 dollars, which would have to weigh whether or not it would be worthwhile. In addition, you may not need a replacement full choke, just might need a CLA (clean, lubricate and adjust) work, which would be less. If you plan to keep the movie for the long term I think it would be worthwhile, as the F4, but not as good as the F5 incredible, it remains an amazing camera that is built like a tank. Also note that you can get in good F4s KEH for about $ 300, so you have plenty of options to weigh. Good luck!
