First digital SLR camera. Canon XTI vs Nikon D40 (40x) vs D60?

I am currently using the Canon Rebel XT/350D through my photography class in college. I found a website that has a decent price cameras, and I have the following options: Canon XTI The standard 18-55 lens with the Nikon D40 VR Kit with the kit lens 55mm-200mm lenses 18 and 55 or the Nikon D60 with VR lens kit 18-55, all for about the same price. I like the extra lens with the D40, but the child will be Mpixels enough? Basically I want to take pictures of everyday things, extreme sports often really my thing, but the landscapes, nature, etc will be. Macro also photos too. I wonder what the camera will do the trick. Thanks in advance. I forgot to add, is the 40x worth the extra money?
