Compact Flash compatibility?

I have a Nikon Coolpix 5700 and has been using a 1GB card in the same flash. I just bought a 4GB card flash and when I try to format, I get and "Out of Memory" Error. Is this a limitation of size in the camera or there is a problem with the Compact Flash?

Is the camera. I am surprised that work with the 1GB card. When the 5700 was king of the long zoom digital camera, 64MB card is about average, and 256 cards were $ 100.
