What kind of lens should I buy for my Nikon D40?

I have a Nikon D40 and have been using the Nikkor 55mm-18 that came along with. Although it is a slow decline, I want something better that I can use every day. I want to be able to make different varieties of shots at most, near, medium, single and multiple shots. I normally do landscapes and portraits. What would be a good target for me? Nothing over $ 400 please and thank you!

What exactly So finding your current lens failure? Want to replace or to supplement it with another goal? Anyway, based on the description you want to do a variety of totally differnent types of photography with her … probably will not get everything in a single lens in that budget. These are options to consider: Nikkor 50mm/1.4G (not D!) – excellent for portraits in low light and shallow depth of field. $ 350 Nikkor 35mm/1.8G – decent walkaround lens low light. $ 200 Tamron 28-75/2.8 – slightly longer than the normal standard zoom, $ 350 Tamron 17-50/2.8 with or without venture capital, $ 400 – better zoom level you currently have or 55-300 VR nikkor 55-200 VR – telephoto ok-ish.
