Why is my camera usually go to an opening of F.18?

I have a Nikon D90 with a 200mm 18-55mm and 55, when I tried to put my opening at f1.8 while sitting at my computer at night for some reason in the 18-55mm (AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 G) I was not able to go below F5.3, and my other lens i do not go below f4.5 (AF-S DX Zoom – Nikkor f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED), but in both of the lenses i can go as high as F.36 Why ? No explanation would be helpful. I am a beginner and do not really understand all the jargon of photography so if u could please make ur explanation as simple as possible, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It has nothing to do with the shooting mode, its relationship with the lens. Remember that f stop (aperture) lens brands relate to wider lens aperture can be opened. The maximum aperture (ie smaller f stop) that its 18-55mm lens will do is f 3.5. Is what they say f / 3.5 to 5.6 on it! Is a variable aperture lens opening means MAX is 18 mm f3.5 and 55 mm MAX opening is f5.6. You can not f1.8 with any of these lenses. Minimum aperture (ie, the smallest hole in the diaphragm) is F32 for both. The same explanation of 55mm-200mm lens.
