How 4frames per second in the Nikon D5000?

Ok, I really do not want to sound stupid. I just bought a nikon digital slr camera D5000 last week. I found very much the basics. I found pop, alone, quiet, and more modes of transport. I know about speeds shutter. But my camera in burst mode without flash has a frame of a second instead of 4 frames per second. That is why you bought, among other things. I looked at the manual, Nikon's website, at loads of reviews and they all say that it is in burst mode. I've tried almost everything, what am I doing wrong? Please help me, I start my first class in photography school Monday and I need to know how to operate my camera. I tried to put the shutter speed and remains a under a second, I've played with the ISO and the flash and AE-L. I know it is supposed to be in manual or shutter on the mode dial, but still does not work. Help?

I guess you missed the 65 page manual. If the shutter speed it is longer than 1/8th second, the shutter can not shoot a speed of 4 fps you must include the time it takes to flip the mirror and settle and the opening and closing shutter and the mirror down again. If you are using the camera in "auto" want to fire the flash and can not fire at 4 fps. No flash can shoot so fast with the exception of special scientific flashes designed to operate on the flash sequences specified. Flash units can heat or simply run out of power in those conditions.
