Master Digital Infrared Photography with nikon digital slr

The Nikon D70 DSLR is ideal for digital infrared photography, mainly due to the power of your custom settings. I will take a moment to show what the camera settings I use for my digital photos Infrared and hope help you get the best results from your Nikon digital SLR.

First thing – get a tripod, this is almost a necessity for perfect shots infrared and the infrared filter of your choice – I like the Hoya R72.

Next, take some time to plan their digital infrared photography. Taking the time to do this in advance will help eliminate some of the uncertainties of digital infrared photography, which can result in only a picture but instead of a WOW! photo.

As always with these things, there is no single way to achieve results. However, these steps are as I have had the most success with, with my D70 until now.

Image Type

For digital infrared photography actually prefer to shoot in RAW mode. Although Nikon NEF native is so versatile, simply does not reach the high quality RAW mode, and any imperfection can always edit out using Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro

ISO

Good results can be achieved by increasing the ISO settings, but I had the best results when I leave it at 200. Otherwise the noise is too great – at least in my opinion. I also do a fair amount of post processing in Photo store, so that noise is a problem when working at higher magnifications. Remember that, unlike infrared film, where the grain is part of the image appearance infrared digital "grain" or noise actually degrades the image. If you want to add the look of film grain, they do in Photoshop or another image program edition.

White Balance

In my experience, setting a custom white balance is a key to good infrared digital photography with the Nikon D70. Because you are using a filter that blocks most "normal" light, camera's internal mechanism white balance can not provide an accurate measurement of color temperature of their environment. Since the foliage reflects infrared light, which is the brightest, whitest part of your photo, you have to "calibrate" your D70 to let you know that green light is visible as infrared target.

There are a couple of ways to do this.

NUMBER 1: The simplest method of white balancing using the D70 is to open the menu, use the control button to turn toward the white balance adjustment, and change to 3 fluorescent. As for infrared photography you'll be most likely to shoot in sunlight with a filter "red", adding some false color correction in the camera, seems to give final IR images more "punch". I've also found the incandescent setting overworked.

NUMBER 2: Another way to adjust the white balance for digital infrared photography with the Nikon D70 is take a picture of green grass at noon full sun. Only the grass – no feet, no trees, no sky. Just point the camera in the grass looking down, and click! Now in its menu must set the white balance of this photo. So, go to your menu, select the white balance,> preset> Photo of use> select the image> use Rotary control to scroll to the image of the grass (hopefully that is the only card to make it easier). Your menu should now say "this Image> set. "Now you're ready to shoot infrared!
