Help the best goal Sports – Zoom?

I am using a Nikon D40 to photograph Australia Football (AFL). Currently I have 1 to 5 Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4-5 5AF 6G ED lens, which is working very well in about mid-range (3 to 40mtrs away). However, when trying to take photos from the other side of the earth (approx. 60 – 80mtrs away) I'm obviously not get in as close as I would like. The picture is still good as the D40 SLR is an impressive, but the detail is clear that there when I go to edit or crop the photo. Can someone please suggest a good zoom lens that could help me get a little closer and increase my details. I've been doing a little research on the net, but I've seen those Nikkor lenses are very expensive and almost out of my price range. I have my eye on now in the Sigma 50-500mm f4-6.3 EX DG / HSM, but right now I'm not sure if it's good for sports or action photography. Some tips are welcome. Thanks Paul.

Hi Paul, the Sigma 50-500mm lens probably will be fine for you, if it is a sunny day. The problem I have is the weather, which will not have much light In addition to filming the slowness of the lens is, you will also see the problems with auto focus lens as you lose the light. In general, these objectives slower sunshine need to focus correctly quickly to get a shot of fast moving objects. You also need to crank up ISO of the camera to compensate for the lack of light, but their shots began to be grainy. Do you have your heart set on a zoom lens? You may want to consider a lens of 400 mm or 500 mm that is bright (f2.8 or so) and could be less in the same price range zoom. Hope this helps. Tony Walks
