Is there a camera similar to the Fujifilm FinePix F31fd/F30?
I’m looking to buy a camera which can take really nice, fast photos in low-light (preferably no more than $400) and I want the Fujifilm FinePix F31fd but I realised that it uses the xD card and not a normal SD card, which got me disappointed.
Can someone tell me of a camera that is similar to this one or even better? I want a camera that can take pictures which won’t turn out blurry during a concert. I used a Nikon Coolpix S6 and I hate it so much because of the slow shutter speed. It is such a terribly photo in low-light.
Could someone also tell me what specifications to look out for when buying a camera for this purpose as well?
Please and thank you!
sorry, and I forgot to mention that I was looking for a compact camera D:
I might suggest the Panasonic DMC-FZ8. Here are some more details about it:
- 7.2 megapixels so you can make large prints (11×14″ and up)
- 12x optical zoom with Mega O.I.S. (big zoom with image stabilization to get sharper pictures in low light)
- ISO range 80-1250, 3200 via ISO expansion mode
- Full manual controls so you can customize exposure
- VENUS III engine provides (claimed) faster autofocus and extremely reduced shutter lag.
A full review is available in Link 1. The one thing the article does suggest is that you turn off noise reduction in the camera or lower it, and this would come into play at your concerts. A lot of times it’s better to use external computer software to do noise reduction than rely on the camera to do it. Other than that, this camera has been favorably reviewed by several sources.
I also found a good starter kit for you for about $300 in Link 2. The kit comes with the camera, 2 1GB SD cards, and a carrying bag for your camera in addition to everything else that usually comes with the camera. I think this would be a great value.
For concerts, the obvious choice would be to look for a camera that performs well at higher ISO ratings. As the ISO number increases, the noisier or more “grainy” your pictures will appear. However, aside from cameras like the F31fd, ther aren’t many cameras in your price range that offer great high ISO performance. This is because of the camera sensor in point and shoots- they are usually smaller than their digital SLR counterparts, and cramming more megapixels into a smaller physical area usually means poor performance at higher ISO.
If you want to look at something that attempts to bridge this gap, you would have to increase your budget, but you could then look at cameras like the Canon G7 or G9, which offer larger sensors and better high ISO performance, but at a price premium.
