Canon or Nikon?

I know it's the age old question but I'm struggling. I have read the regular comments on dpreview etc. I have about £ 400 – £ 450 for spend on a DSLR. This is what I'm looking. Nikon D40 nice, but I think I like to use the features of AEB and I would like the flexibility not use AF-S lenses so this really is not much beyond Nikon D50 is probably my best option at this time, it feels good in my hand, I get to a large extent a kit with an additional lens Tamron 70-300, but I really really hate that the small screen and I can not stop thinking of the best features of the 400D. Nikon D80 desire … my ideal camera, but too expensive Canon 400D / Rebel XTi I get one of these with the basic objective of the kit (18-55) for about 450 pounds and in my price range is easily the best specced, but I prefer the Nikon setup and how it feels. It is the increase of specifications for the D50 worth it?

I'm more partial the Pentax or LICA. But if it was me. I would wait and save for the one I really wanted instead of settling. So wait for that one.
