Is Nikon D3100 + nikkor 18-105mm VR lens a good combo to start with?
I have been using dSLRs for some time and want to get my first now. I feel certain limitations with 18-55 lens majorly because of its low zoom. What do u suggest?
When I started shooting creatively, it was with a Minolta XG-1 35mm SLR and a 45mm f/2 lens. The flexibility of the 18-55mm with vibration reduction and even the limited low-light ability of my D5000 is amazing in comparison.
The extra money for the 18-105mm isn’t really worth it IMHO. It is a big lens on the D3100 and 105mm isn’t really going to give you that much reach (at the short end, a few mm mean a lot, not so much at the long end).
I would get the 18-55mm and then buy either a 55-200mm or 55-300mm for much better results. Even the difference between 200mm and 300mm is minimal.
